The Golden-crowned warbler was seen at the park, for an extended period
of time this morning from shortly after 10:30 for around 45 minutes in
spite of the windy conditions. First, low just across from the gazebo
along with the Wilson's warbler, then was relocated alone with no other
birds just downstream from the gazebo in the tall Ligustrom and
Hackberry trees next to the river. Surprisingly, it spent about half
the time rather high in the Ligustroms (sometimes about 15 feet up)
gleaning insects from around the stems then at mid-level and
occasionally near the ground. It was very cooperative and not
particularly spooky since there were about 10 or so people watching
including most with cameras clicking away. At times it was within 10-15
feet of the birders. I left at 1:30 so don't know if it returned later.
No one I spoke with had seen either the Summer or Flame-colored tanager
by the time I left.
