Below is my trip list for East Beach, Galveston, the North Jetty, and
the Bolivar Flats yesterday, 10/26/2016.
Nominally I went to photograph the continuing Pormarine Jaeger at East
Beach. I wasn't disappointed I could see him on the sand from the
parking area a quarter of a mile away! He yawned, stood up and
stretched and mostly ignored me while I was there and shot a greedy
number of photos
The small plovers there put on a show, mostly piping plovers and some
snowy, plus at least one Semipalmated Plover.
Headed over to the North Jetty on the Bolivar Peninsula next and
conditions were amazing. thousands of birds and many posed for close
photos, I estimated 2500 American Avocets there were huge numbers of
small shorebirds, but I neglected to carry a scope out on the jetty
and only was able to ID a few with binoculars.
On to the Bolivar Flats themselves. I was hoping for the Great
Black-backed Gull that was reported a few weeks ago but there were few
gulls. Big numbers of Brown Pelicans though. The small plover show
continued here. I spent lots of time with the camera and less with the
scope and I'm sure I could have more than double the number reported
if I had worked the scope harder, After I closed out my checklist and
was driving out there were even more small plovers, this time mostly
Snowy Plovers that could easily have tripled my number of Snowies.
