Hi all: Not a spectacular day, but one that was very interesting. The day just about started with the... Bird of the Day: The Greater White-fronted Goose flight was quite fun, with 769 individuals in 17 flocks. However, I find it interesting that every flock that I've seen has passed by heading west or southwest. Why don't they just go straight where they're going? The Pine Siskin that flew over Joe and me early was also much appreciated. Will it be the first and last, or the first of the invading hordes? I believe that the correct answer is the latter choice. There was still at least one Rufous Hummer about, but not at all a big landbird flight (1 W. Kingbird, 10 Scissor-taileds, 1 Red-breasted Nuthatch, 4 B-g Gnats, And 9 Indigo Buntings). Other species of note included a fly-by Common Nighthawk and a calling Pileated Woodpecker, both after 3 pm. Raptors counted (count conducted by Gulf Coast Bird Observatory): Turkey Vulture 13 Osprey 2 Bald Eagle 1 juv (1 more ties the record) Northern Harrier 19 (1 ad f, 4 j, 14 brown - they were WAY up there!) Sharp-shinned Hawk 35 Cooper's Hawk 36 Red-shouldered Hawk 1 juv Broad-winged Hawk 51 juvs Swainson's Hawk 14 light White-tailed Hawk 1 dark juv Red-tailed Hawk 1 juv American Kestrel 55 (78 to tie record) Merlin 1 ad m Peregrine Falcon 3 (1a, 1j, 1u) Total 233 Tonight and tomorrow are looking pretty good.
