A very cool and blustery day here still yielded some great birding for our
group this morning on the Bayside Drive at the Refuge. With thousands of
acres of shallow fresh water in Pelican Lake, Patos and Bayside Lakes, and
every low spot, the waterfowl numbers are immense.
Intense north winds last night have blown much of the shallow waters along
the shoreline out of the Laguna, aka( "wind tides") exposing mud flats and
shoal grass. Despite the lack of wading birds usually present, there was
still lots to see as the list of 55 species below will show.
Refuge Bird Tours for January-March are Thursdays through Mondays
:8:30am-noon, and Fridays 1:00-4:30pm. Tours generally alternate between
Laguna Atascosa and Bahia Grande areas. Call 956-748-3608 ext. 111 to make
your reservation!
