Marie,
I have only been on texbirds for about 8 months now. I have posted one
other time about a banded plover that I thought would be appropriate,
but TEXBIRDS
has yet to post any of my emails. I guess I just have not earned “my
wings” yet.
At a minimum I wanted you to know Kathy and I were successful in seeing
the painted redstart and saw a lot of first time birds for Kathy. If you
want to edit the
email below and post our seeing the bird on Oct 7th to texbirds you can.
Thanks for your help,
Dennis Cooke

Based on Marie Stewart’s posting on October 4th and some additional help
from her, my wife and I went down to the rest stop about 8 miles south
of Falfurrias on Hwy 281
to look for the painted redstart yesterday. We arrived at the rest stop
about 9 AM and found the painted redstart immediately at the south end
sitting on a barbeque pit on
one of the tables. After watching this bird for about 30 minutes, we
decided to bird the rest of the area. We stayed at the rest stop for 2
1/2 hours.
Being new to birding (we started birding in January of this year), most
of the birds were lifers for my wife- painted redstart, green jay,
eastern bluebird,
golden-fronted woodpecker, lesser goldfinch, black-crested titmouse,
couch’s kingbird, and great kiskadee. I have spent a lot of time in
South Texas over the
years so I had 2 lifers- the painted redstart and western tanager.
You can see these 2 birds and some of the other birds I photographed at
my flickr site. It is the first 11 pictures.
