This bird lacks a solid brown tail and distinct secondary bar on the wing, which is not good for Thayer's Gull. Also the mantle is too pale. Hard to tell from just two photos at an odd angle, but it looks better for a second-winter Iceland Gull to me. More photos would be helpful, especially of the bird in flight. Looking at the water it is down to the right. I have received confirmation from both Ron Weeks and Cin-Ty-Lee that it is indeed a Thayer's Gull. The bird had a very pale gray back but otherwise had the markings of a first year bird. The wings and tail were very pale compared to a lot of young Herring Gulls sitting around. Notice the darkest part of the primaries is the outer side of the feather even though it is pale.
