Brush, Fascinating reading ... I must try that road sometime. I was going to mention that I have seen probably about 250 species (or more) in Kenedy County, but only because I was lucky enough to be placed on an offshore oil platform for 3 different seasons as part of the Migration-over-the-Gulf project some time ago. Truly some of the most interesting birding I have ever experienced! But Jay, getting to an offshore oil platform is essentially impossible unless some specific project is going on. I know this is all likely off-topic, so will not comment again on this subject. Date: Fri, 28 Dec 2012 22:13:17 -0600 It is quite odd you should bring this up as my friend Jim Sinclair and I discussed this very thing in part today. In short, there are virtually no options other than 77 and Sarita. But allow me me to provide a few tid-bits. I formerly spent a large amount of time on the Kenedy Ranch both as eco-tour guide for trips and as a biologist for projects there, my time was nearly always between 77 and the Laguna so I (and a few others, including Jim, Petra, and Glenn Perrigo and a few others know it pretty well. La Parra Road that strikes out due east of Sarita is ALWAYS a good detour for birders heading south toward the valley, especially in wet years when the various playas and ponds hold water (Botteri's Sparrows, Audubon's Orioles, Cactus Wrens etc.)..It will eventually end at a manned gate.... ...at that gate is the entrance to the old mansion and monastery. Special permission can be gained (or used to be) for access to that historic area. Indeed at least at one time folks could come in, observing the rather strict rules of silence and repect and spend time in reflection there..No radios, TVs or other gadgets were permitted even photography was/is restricted.. I understood even silent meals with the monks there was/is possible..I do not know if this is still the case.. If so for the birder happens to gain entry , as we formeraly did, the birding can be fabulous as there is a number of acres forested in palms...Tropical Parulas abound as well as Hooded Orioles and the other S. Texas birds to be expected there. This is one of the southernmost points for breeding E. Bluebird and the (to my knowledge) the northernmost place where Altamria Orioles occur/occurred etc. I have not checked into the access issues in almost a decade, so things may have changed. On could likely check with the folks at the museum there in Sarita for details on access. The old mansion with its machine gun turrets, the old Kenedy grave site, the cowboy cemetery are unique to south Texas as is the purpose and palms of the place in general...Day visits may not be an option, but solitude in one of the tiny Spartan cabins might be for overnight or for several days. There may be a visiting schedule now...I just do not know. It was somewhat closed to all on either Sat. or Sun. but I forget which now... It is sort of independent of the rest of the two ranches...ie The Trust and the Foundation, but is part of the Foundation...The monastery moved from the LRGV near Santa ANA NWR quite a number of years ago, tho that old building still is down there in the Valley.....Let us know what you find out....Good question. Otherwise, I know of no public access to any other place in the county, one of the least populated in the state. -- Brush Freeman Independent and affiliated Field Biologist 361-655-7641 http://texasnaturenotes.blogspot.com/ Finca Alacranes., Utley,Texas The greatest musician of all time is mother nature.
