Subject: Probable Spotted Doves at MCWHA

Friday a.m. I had a small flock of doves I can identify only as Spotted Doves,
as improbable as that seems. There was a small flock of 8-10 doves on the fence
wires , a few on each side of Schwarzelose in the area of the small burn on the
Habitat. A few Mourning Doves were on the high wires above them and a huge
flock of Mournings just down the way on the high wires.

The birds on the fence line caught my attention because one I could see well
seemed to have an all white underneath tail. AS I eased the truck closer,
stopping every few yards to look, they began to fly off 2 or 3 at the time and
disappeared in the tall grass in the pasture across from the Habitat. One was
especially cooperative and finally I was looking at it head on at maybe 10-15
yards.

The bottom side of the tail was all white up nearly to the base. It was long
and relatively slim and was sort of scalloped on the end, not square but
certainly not pointed. When the birds flew, the top side of the tail was
similar to a White-wing, except that the white band extended further up toward
the base at the edges.. The wings were dark brown and showed no white, either
flying or at rest. The body was a lighter brown, but much more brown than our
other doves of that size. I did not detect any pinkish cast as some books
depict. Also, I did not get good enough look at thenape to see if any had the
namesake patch of spots. The books say that younger birds do not have the
spots. In size, they were similar to the Mourning Doves--perhaps a little
heavier bodied.

Does anyone know of any effort to transplant Spotted Doves from California to
this area? Also, does anyone know of any other species that my description
might fit?

Bob
