Texbirders,
Yesterday (05/09), Janice Travis & I visited the Norias Division of King Ranch
in Kenedy Co. to take care of a non-birding errand, but we decided to make a
slight detour and check on some of the known pygmy-owl nesting areas. Despite
it being after 10 am and rather windy, in about 2.5 hours we located 8
pygmy-owls ( 7 seen and 1 heard) that represented 7 different territories. Not
bad given the limited route we stayed to and interestingly one owl was spotted
perched in a tree while we driving along a ranch road where I had not yet found
an owl this spring. May and early June typically represent the easiest time
to see pygmy-owls on King Ranch given their nesting activity at this time of
year.
Other interesting sightings included a calling first year male Altamira Oriole,
an oriole species not regularly seen on King Ranch. I had two Altamira Orioles
in the same location about a 1.5 weeks ago so hopefully the other is on a nest
somewhere nearby. Another highlight included a small flock of Chipping
sparrows, a species that I had thought should be further north by this date.
