Hi, all!
Took Derek and Helen out again today on what turned out to be a pretty hot
day hiking around; highlights at Estero include a pair of Red-crowned
Parrots showing nicely, a Beardless Tyrannulet in plain view (unfortunately
not long enough for Derek to get a look, especially with my malfunctioning
tripod :(), and the continuing Pauraque. Didn't see the Glossy Ibis,
although we had a White-faced in Ibis Pond, and a nice selection of the
common waders, ducks, and herons in general, and netted a Swainson's Hawk by
talking the long walk back! We stopped at Frontera to get them their
White-tipped Doves (they flushed from the feeders at Estero but never came
back again after 15 minutes!), then at Progresso Sod Farms on the way to
Santa Ana where we ran into Randy from Santa Ana and had about six or seven
American Golden Plovers, plus a Long-billed Curlew! After a report of
Ringed Kingfisher and Fulvous Whistling Ducks, we headed on to Santa Ana but
dipped on both, and a hot walk out to Pintail Lakes added Tricolored Heron,
White Ibis, Pied-billed Grebe, and Bank Swallow to the day list. Heard a
distant Gray Hawk on the way back, and ended up with a respectable 81
species for the day!
