I started the day at 7:30 with my wife and eldest son hiking in the Franklin Mountains. The first thing we saw upon getting out of the truck were a herd of Steller's Jays. I counted 15 which looked as if they had roosted on the hillside in Ocotillo/Lechugilla habitat of all things. This is behind a neighborhood with lots of food for them. Lots of Flickers up there as well. Later as we came down a canyon, we got into a chorus of Rock Wrens and a covey of Gambel's Quail. I then checked on the Lewis's Woodpecker that I found on our CBC on Sunday. It was still there and this time it was swooping down into a Live Oak and competing with more Steller's Jays for acorns. I have never before seen this species eating acorns. A trip to Memorial Park was disappointing. It was 11:00 by then and the park was fairly dead. I did however re-find the Brown Creeper that Barry Zimmer had found on the CBC. He also found (and I photographed the next day) a Blue-headed Vireo, a Pygmy Nuthatch, and a Pine Warbler. I was unable to photograph this Nuthatch or Warbler. Next up was the Jonathan Rogers Water Treatment Plant where a Long-tailed Duck was found earlier in the week by C.J. Goin of Las Cruces NM. She was fairly easy to spot among the hundreds of ducks there. A good day of birding.
