Sorry for the short message earlier today but I haven't figured out the settings on my phone so that the body of my TEXBIRD messages aren't garbled. This morning I found an adult, unbanded Whooping Crane north of Thrall. I was first drawn to the area by Sandhills flying in from the south (probably from their traditional roost on CR 435). I first saw the bird from 8:00-8:30 am on the south side of CR 420 (just east of CR 424) feeding in a plowed field with Sandhills and geese (7 Snow, 7 Ross's and 35 Greater White-fronted). I studied it again from 10:00-10:30 am as it was feeding in a pasture with Sandhills (both species flipping cow patties) on the north side of CR 420. There were at least 414 Sandhills. Other highlights of 75 species for the morning included: 17 waterfowl species (including 2 Greater Scaup on CR 352 stock pond) 1 adult Bald Eagle soaring over Granger Lake (seen from the dam) 24 Mountain Plovers feeding in the field NW of the CR 346/CR 347 intersection 1 Burrowing Owl on CR 356 1 Pileated Woodpecker on CR 348 Cheers and Happy New Year, Tim Fennell Round Rock, TX (15 miles north of Austin) Edit your Freelists account settings for TEXBIRDS at //www.freelists.org/list/texbirds Reposting of traffic from TEXBIRDS is prohibited without seeking permission from the List Owner
