Hi Texbirders,
After the heavy rains the previous day, I had a hunch the Cut-off Road
Sod Farm would be worth trying. Glad I went. The main sod field was
flooded and I had twelve species of shorebirds not too far away in really
nice light. The road was even passable which usually isn't the case the
day after a heavy rain.
When I first got there, a Merlin put the birds up, and it took awhile
for most of the birds to return. The birds came and went in groups,
putting on quite a show as they circled low around me on both sides of the
road. Viewing conditions were fantastic.
63 American Golden-Plover
2 Killdeer
45 Upland Sandpiper
37 Dunlin
120 Least Sandpiper
2 Buff-breasted Sandpiper
9 Pectoral Sandpiper
1 Semipalmated Sandpiper
117 Long-billed Dowitcher
1 Solitary Sandpiper
7 Greater Yellowlegs
14 Lesser Yellowlegs
Last Year in mid-April at this location I had some nice high counts of
shorebirds. The water shouldn't dry up for a week or so. Worth the time if
you live nearby.
I'll have to go back tomorrow for sure.
Good birding,
