Happy Fall, y'all! It was in the 60s this a.m., first time since May, and Susan Foster, Terry Zambon and I headed out to the Fred Jones Sanctuary in Portland to see some wobblers. I drove over there on the Joe Fulton Corridor, which meant I had to stop several times to look at the birds along the way. There were 100+ Black-crowned Night Herons on the pond and my first of season American Kestrel flew over the road. (Eyes on the road, Judy, eyes on the road -- the crunch of gravel under my tires jolted me back to the task of driving...) After all the rain the mosquitoes at the sanctuary were thick but we plunged into the lush green vegetation and were rewarded with many Black-and-White Wobblers, Blue-gray Gnatcatchers galore, a female Summer Tanager, Chuck-Will's-Widows lurching away from us, a cuckoo that we wished were Black-billed but turned out to be Yellow-billed, female Indigo Bunnies and Blue Grosbeaks and a nice kettle of Broadwinged Hawks - around 200 of them - in the clear morning air. Some flew so low we could count their eyelashes. Went on to Sunset Park in Portland and had a conversation with a man named Dan about the short-billed Long-billed Curlews there (Mel Cooksey, we stuck up for you!). Also had a white Reddish Egret, three American Avocets and one Least Sandpiper, among other usuals. Lovely day.
