TexBirders, For those of you crazy enough to try to bird the coves of Choke Canyon Reservoir east of the Calliham Unit, a study of Google Earth suggests that there are at least two old elevated county road beds which are now exposed in the region east of the tent camping area. These *may*—just may—be more easily traversed than the march through salt cedar I made last Monday. One which looks intriguing departs from the paved park road at/near the junction of the turnoff to the tent camping area and heads just S of due E. I’d recommend studying the current image of Google Earth, and then be prepared for a rough hike in any event. The nearest water’s edge on that old county/ranch road appears to be about 1.4 miles away (nearly 3 mile round trip) But the rewards might be worth it. I make no guarantees on these hikes and I urge extreme caution and good preparation and safety consideration if you attempt one of these.
