I did chambers county and high island on the 27th and got my season patch to be ready for the hordes of migrants coming. Most of the migrants that day were grasspipers with the upland sandpipers the tamest. They were feeding in medium grass http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/149451100 And still sunbathing a little as there was frost on the grass http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/149451099 Some just stood around for a long time http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/149451096 Showing off nice yellow legs http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/149451095 They were getting things to eat but it was hard to id any as most were swallowed with the bill down in the vegetation http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/149451086 it will take many captures like this to make a meal http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/149451084 A merlin at anahuac did better by capturing a yellow-rumped warbler http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/149450932 I could hear the warbler chipping as it went by back of the car and the merlin spotted it too http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/149450936 The other foot came down and the warbler was breakfast but out of sight http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/149450939 American bitterns were returning to shoveler pond to roost sounding very much like black-crowned night herons http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/149450921 And some took advantage of the sun http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/149450919 You can still id older and younger common gallinules or whatever they are called this week by beak color. Here older http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/149450923 And younger http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/image/149450928 All of these and many more can be browsed at http://www.pbase.com/joseph_kennedy_36/inbox -- Joseph C.
