Arlie found a male Cape May Warbler in the Packery Channel residential
area this afternoon. The bird was seen at 3:15 PM and again at about 5 PM.
It was seen by a small group of birders and was photographed. The location
is on Sanddollar Avenue at Villa Maria Isabel, especially the open-understory
oaks on the north side of Sanddollar. This is adjacent to the Audubon
Outdoor Club's boardwalk, and is just on the opposite side of the big
oak motte which adjoins the AOC property. The bird was in the company
of a Tennessee Warbler. Scarlet Tanagers and Rose-breasted Grosbeaks
were in the immediate vicinity.
This is the earliest Coastal Bend record for CMWA that I have found and is
right at the earliest date range for Texas records. There is an April 11, 2003
record for Bolivar Peninsula and a few 4-15, 4-16 records. It arrives earlier
in the eastern states, with even a few March records.
