I spent about 3-1/2 hours in Calhoun County this morning and counted 60
species. Birded Sikes Catfish Farm and had a nice flock of Purple Martins
roosting on the utility wires. A few Fulvous Whistling Ducks and the only
shorebirds were a single Least Sandpiper and a Lesser Yellowlegs along with
Killdeer and Black-necked Stilt.
I then scoped the flooded field on the W side of 316 down fro Hubbard Ranch. 4
Purple Gallinules, a Least Bittern, and more Fulvous Whistling Ducks.
Then on Brighton Road a Wood Stork was in a flock of herons and egrets. Just
off Brighton on Comal Street was a wetlands area that had 5 Lesser Yellowlegs
but no other shorebirds. In Magic Ridge there were 3 LB Curlews, a Marbled
Godwit, an Eastern Kingbird, a Painted Bunting, and a male Orchard Oriole.
Good birding for me despite the heat
