The Buffalo Bayou CBC encompassing west Houston will be held on Sun= day

The Buffalo Bayou Christmas Bird Coun= t was first held in 1978 and is now
inits 39th year. It was established to document the birds on the west side=
of Houston, a part of the city containing a verity of habitats for = an
urbancount that is subject to fairly rapid residential and commercial d=
evelopment. On the first count in 1978, 90 species were observed. Last year=
this count produced 127 species of birds and over the last ten years this =
count has averaged around 127 species (113 species average since inception)=
with a high count of 136 species. It is possible to see up to 15 species o=
fsparrows on this count, including the elusive Henslow=E2=80=99s and Grass=
hopper Sparrows. Other =E2=80=9CSpecial Birds=E2=80=9D seen over the last f=
ive years have included: hooded merganser, merlin, peregrine falcon, solita=
ry sandpiper, American woodcock, common ground-dove, greater pewee, western=
kingbird, red-breasted nuthatch, eastern towhee, green-tailed towhee, rust=
yblackbird, purple finch and pine siskin. This count is one of the most po=
pular in Texas; we would like you to join in the fun and help us eclipse th=
e high count of 136 species.
The Buffalo B= ayou CBC is centered at the Houston Audubon Society's Edith
L.Moore Sanctuary. It extends from Memorial Park o= n the east to beyond
Highway 6 on the west; from the Southwest Freeway at W= est Belt on the
southto FM 529 near= Jersey Village on the north. This area includes sizable
chunks of excellent habitat: Houston Arboretum = and Nature Center (HANC),
Memorial Park, Art Storey Park, Addicks &Bar= ker Reservoirs, Bear Creek
Park, Edith L. Moore Sanctuary and Buffal= o Bayou.
The count wil= l run from 6:30 am to 6:30 pm when all participants will
assemble at Sweet = Tomatoes for the countdown dinner where you will get the
opportunity to sha= re your days=E2=80=99 birding stories with your fellow
birders and hear wha= t species each area was able to find as we find out
what the totally tally = for the count will be. A very nice way to rap up a
long day of birding.
