David: Thanks for getting this started last year. I discovered several great places to bird near my home, where I was able to spend the odd 45 minutes when I had it to spare. I got 144 species in my north Harris County patch, but what and where I found them surprised me. Who knew that Roseate Spoonbills were so common this far from the coast? I think a pair even bred about a mile from my house. To everyone else, if you do participate, please follow the directions in e-bird for how to set up a patch and include specific locations. I noticed a couple of patches in my area where there was only one location, a 7.5 mile radius circle centered on someone's home. This relegates e-bird to nothing more than a personal list notepad. If you want to see your just-entered list updated in your patch, go to the explore data - patch totals page. Select [edit] your list, even if the location is already part of it. Save it and your patch is immediately updated. My modest number gives me a target to shoot for in 2014. I'm going to go get started right now. -Bob White Spring, TX Edit your Freelists account settings for TEXBIRDS at //www.freelists.org/list/texbirds Reposting of traffic from TEXBIRDS is prohibited without seeking permission from the List Owner
