The new year is upon us and the 2014 Local Patch Challenge is starting. The Challenge is how many species of birds can you find in a circle of 7.5 miles radius centered on your home (or second home)? More than 20 people found more than 200 species in their local patch circle in 2013. If you would like to play the game in 2014, we have a facebook group for it at https://www.facebook.com/groups/247047528758661/ In the file section you'll find tools for drawing your circle and how to set up you patch in eBird to track your numbers. The rules are pretty simple, how many species can you find inside a 7.5 radius circle centered on your home, second home, mom's house etc. There are no prizes, just learning what's possible when you "Bird Local". Instead of driving an hour to get to some hotpot 50 miles away, why not spend that time actually birding? I myself got to 199 species in my suburban Pearland area patch, I know of one very urban patch that broke 200 in Houston, The top patch in eBird last night was Anthony Heweston's Lubbock patch with I believe 283! There are interesting things to learn, like I've noted how important retention ponds seem to be for breeding Mottle Ducks (almost every one in my patch that had water had a pair the breed successfully) Join us, it's fun. -- David Sarkozi Houston, TX (713) 412-4409 twitter ID dsarkozi Edit your Freelists account settings for TEXBIRDS at //www.freelists.org/list/texbirds Reposting of traffic from TEXBIRDS is prohibited without seeking permission from the List Owner
