Today I watched a big dark-colored diving duck about 100 yards out on the bay
from the Port Lavaca bird refuge boardwalk. The duck was much larger than the
Buffleheads near by. I picked it up in my binoculars as it flew from right to
left across my field of vision. The size of the bird reminded me of the Muscovy
Ducks I was used to seeing in the Valley, and it had wide white patches on the
back edge of each wing. The patches did not extend completely across the back
edge of the wing; they covered half the wing edge, nearest the flank, and were
quite broad. I did not get a good look at the head or bill. The closest match
I came up with in my Sibley guide is White-winged Scoter. This location is
within the documented winter range of this species. I invite comments.  Bob
