Hi Texbirders,
As many of you know, Fort Worth Audubon Society has held an
official Big Sit every October for the last eight years at the Village
Creek Drying Beds in Arlington. Due to recent restricted access and a lack
of water, FWAS has decided not to conduct the VCDB Big Sit this year.

Instead, I will be hosting a big sit in my backyard on the
west end of Lake Waxahachie on Saturday October 11th from 6 am until dark.
Fort Worth Audubon members were given first priority to sign up until
October 1st and now I’m offering the remaining spots to the DFW birding
community. Since this is a residential neighborhood, I am limiting
participation to a total of 25 participants. You must make a reservation
to attend but are not obligated to stay the entire day. (You also do not
have to be there first thing in the morning.) We have only had 8 sign ups
so far so there is plenty of availability to attend at this time.

The birding is very good here on the west end of Lake
Waxahachie as there is a divergence of habitats including mudflats and mud
spits. There is a commanding view to the north with dead snags, lots of
willow trees and riparian vegetation. The back yard has tall cottonwoods in
a park-like setting. The shallow end of the lake to the east should
provide some waterbirds, waders and shorebirds. About anything could show
up here. Our yard list is currently at 149 species for the calendar year
2014.

Amenities at this Big Sit include two heated bathrooms, a
full kitchen, and a hammock for whoever wants to lay back and scan for
raptors. We’ll also be unveiling our new feeding station.

I will be starting before dawn @ 6am and we will be birding
until dusk. Participants are free to come and go at any time they wish,
but we are hoping to get each participant “penciled in” for an approximate
block of time to ensure coverage throughout the day. We will be providing
some food and beverages. Participants may bring a little something to share
if they so choose. Participants will be put on an email list for a few
updates leading up until the Big Sit! Rain date will be Sunday October 12.
If you have never participated in a Big Sit before, they are a lot of fun
and an interesting way to bird. I encourage you to attend.

* DD Currie and Dell Little are also having a Big Sit out at Richland
Chambers WMA on Saturday October 11th and I encourage you to attend one or
the other. See Fort Worth Audubon Website for more into on both of these
big sits.
