Greetings All: I made a trip down to Austin over the past weekend to visit with Rich Kostecke and get in some quality TCC birding. Rich has already shared highlights from our adventures on 3 and 4 November 2012 - it's up to me to post a few highlights from the trip down and back. On Monday, 5 November 2012, I made my way from Austin to Meridian by way of noteworthy birds in Bell, Falls, McLennan, Hill (and Bosque) Counties. My sole highlight from Bell County: 9 Black-bellied Whistling Ducks flying over Highway 53 just west of Seaton. Highlights from Falls County included 1 Canvasback, 1 Spotted Sandpiper, and 1 Common Yellowthroat at Rosebud Lake; 1 Neotropic Cormoratn, 2 adult and 1 immature Bald Eagles, 2 Franklin's Gulls, 1 Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, and 1 White-eyed Vireo at New City Lake near Marlin. Highlights from McLennan County: 2 Common Loons, 5 Neotropic Cormorants, 1 American White Pelican, 1 immature Bald Eagle, 2 Forster's Terns, 1 Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, and 2 Brow3n Creepers at/near Tradinghouse Creek Reservoir - as accessed from the park along Pevalka Drive). Highlights from Hill County: 2 American White Pelicans, 1 immature Bald Eagle, 1 Spotted Sandpiper, 7 Least Sandpipers, 6 Long-billed Dowitchers, 20 Franklin's Gulls, 7 Forster's Terns, 1 Brown Creeper, 1 Common Yellowthroat, 1 Le Conte's Sparrow, and 1 Fox Sparrow at Lofer's Bend Park on the Hill County side of Whitney Reservoir. It should be noted that the American White Pelicans, Bald Eagle, Franklin's Gulls, and Forster's Terns probably spent some time on the Bosque County side of the reservoir.
