It is my habit, as many birders have, to start a new annual list every year so
January 1st is always a big birding day.

Mine started off with a great find, SHORT EARED OWL at 7:05 a.m., while the
ground still pitch black (full cloud cover) on Porter Road, looking west and
flying near to 529. I watched it hunt until it pounced on something and didn't
come back up. Yesterday had a bobwhite on this road, too.

Cooper's was around the corner from Porter, on Longenbaugh. Sharp Road had the
Harris Sparrows and a surprise Swamp Sparrow, at the Cypress Creek crossing.
Another Cooper at the creek, too. Birded only from the road.

A small pond on Katy Hockley (I can't remember if was road or cut-off, the one
that is farther west than the other) had dowitchers and yellowlegs along with
many ducks. Worth checking out if you have a scope.

Paul Rushing Park had gadwall, CANVASBACK, ring necked ducks, American pipets
but no horned larks.

Closer to Brookshire on 529 I got ross goose with blue/snow goose.

Vesper Sparrows, cave swallows and an osprey at Eagle Lake.

Jack Road had a northern flicker.

Bear Creek had at least two blue headed vireos, blue gray gnatcatcher and two
golden crowned kinglets on the Equestrian Trail, dipped on winter wren but I'll
keep looking again later.

At 12:30 on Bear Creek Drive, past the turn to Equestrian Trail parking lot, on
right side (gold course side) of the road were seven NUTMEG MANNIKINS, feeding
with chipping sparrows. For even more exact location, they were near to a white
foam cup and chain "fence." House finches at Golbow and Bear Creek Drive.
Missed the merlin that was on Golbow day before. Need to be there at early
light before he/she wants to go hunting for the day.

Restroom #9 had another northern flicker.

Arthur Storey Park still has the least grebe. It was in the far south end of
the lake, near to vegetation and hanging with a pied billed grebe.

Strange, not one robin no matter where I went, but plenty of cedar waxwings.
