I finished up some point counts begun yesterday in the above and was stunned and very pleased to flush a Woodcock in a off trail area. These birds appear to be low density breeders t in Cen-Tex with a handful of well documented records. Brent O. and I flushed one in this same area on the Jan. 1 CBC and last year I had one feigning injury within likely 60-80 yards or so tho I did not find young or eggs in the density then The location (pt. 6) is inaccessible to birders.. Otherwise, 1 singing Kentucky Warbler (HO) on territory (pt. 4) and a flushed Chuck-will's. The only migrants noted were an early HO Swainson's Thrush (had one still singing on my place last evening) and an empid that got away...which may have been a resident Acadian, as it did not vocalize. Yesterday before the winds picked up, a chinking Rose-breasted Grosbeak was also on the survey route. A pair of Brown-crested are back on territory and the numbers of Western Kingbirds and C. Ground-Doves in the devastated, tho wildly recovering, portions is surprising. A Yellow-breasted Chat appeared to be on territory. A Yellow-crowned Night-Heron was at a small pond. Both are firsts for the project....I think Also had 2 maybe 3 Mourning Cloaks, perhaps due to the quantity of willows and cottonwoods nearby.(?) It ain't over unless you decide it to be...It is never "over"....Slower maybe. ********************************************************************** Brush Freeman 503-551-5150 Cell 120 N.
