TexBirders: James Sheppard, Robyn Scott, and I saw 1,050 birds comprised of 54 species, four of which species were not identified. We saw a mixture of early migrants and lingering nesters. In any case it was a delight to do a late August 4th Saturday Bird Tour-Census in mid-high 90s temperatures rather than the 105-108 that this trip was done in late August, 2011. Highlights of the August 25, 2012 trip included: The Willet that was in Basin 5; Wilson's Phalaropes, 25 in Basin 3; Least and Pied-billed Grebe, one each and side-by-side, in Bird Pond; the migrant or early winter Fuertes' Red-tailed Hawk at Skip's Pond; the very early Ruby-crowned Kinglet that James saw; the two families of Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks at Bird Pond; the Bullock's Oriole adult with four young at Edward's Tank; the group of 34 Black Vultures, 6 Turkey Vultures, and 4 Crested Caracaras that were feeding on some large something along the NE edge of the West Polder. That "something" looked like either a carp or a soft-shelled turtle. Special thanks to Mrs. Scott for having the fortitude to do the entire census of eighteen stops with James and me.
