Today I made my first real chase of the year and went for the rarities at Aransas NWR. The Painted Redstart is amazingly cooperative and not much bothered by watchers. Is interacting some with a male Baltimore Oriole. From just east of the Fishing Pier (at a turnout), I observed one Long-tailed Duck, near, but not with, a bunch of about 65 Pintails. From Dagger Point, I saw saw a group of 11 Surf Scoters and what I believe were 2 Black Scoters. They were distant, so my surmise about the Black Scoters is based somewhat on the testimony of other observers. I did not find the reported Red-headed Woodpecker near the entrance of the park although I spent some time there just watching the dead trees where it is reported. But all in all, a productive trip. Also had 2 Whooping Cranes from near the fishing pier. Of course, while I was straying a Brown Pelican (!) showed up in my patch in Austin. I’ll have to go looking for that in the morning.
