I spent a bit more than 3 hours in Roy Guerrero River Park this morning
(Austin), birding it from the east entrance to just below Longhorn Dam. I
tallied 41 species with a couple of rarities: Prairie Warbler (the 2nd found in
this area this fall) adult male and a Hutton's Vireo. From the beach nearest
the dam, I walked a back trail that up the hill from the east side of the wash
and through the woods to the lower beach. I had not walked that trail in its
entirety before, and didn't know exactly where I would come out. Along it,
however, I encountered 3 groups of foraging migrants that included Empidonax
(not certain which), several warblers, and vireos. Found the Hutton's in the
first group, which I think had 16 birds in it. It was a good bit east of the
coordinates where Chuck had the earlier Prairie Warbler. In the 3rd group of
about 10 foragers, I sighted the male Prairie Warbler and got good looks. Other
sightings besides the usual suspects:
Vireos: White-eyed & Red-eyed
Warblers: Black & White, Nashville, Yellow (6, I'm finally seeing the "hoards"
people have been talking about), Chestnut-sided, Black-throated Green, and
Wilsons
Indigo Bunting
Orchard Oriole
Baltimore Oriole (3)
The Hutton's and Prairie Warbler bring me to 227 in my patch for the year.
Oddly, the only "raptor" the whole morning was a lone Turkey Vulture. I put
notes and coordinates on the PRWA and HUVI in my eBird submission.
