Did a loop around the bay from Anahuac refuge to the texas city dike last
month. Started at Anahuac at sunrise and a good wind out of the north. kept
land birds down but geese moving around. The burrowing owl was out sunning

He enjoyed the sun but not the wind. Twice stood up on the rock to get the
full sun but the wind ruffled the back feathers and down he went. Was alert
and looking for goodies walking around and turned his head to the right and
left

A lot of the shovelers are still in molt

When I was in California over the holidays, almost all of the shovelers
there were fully molted
Five little nutrias were out on shoveler pond for breakfast

Common loons arrive on the coast in late fall still in breeding plumage.
Then they molt and are flightless. And are still flightless now

An adult herring gull on the texas city dike was showing off all its field
marks

Another herring gull had an improperly colored bill. More like a
ring-billed gull both with the oranger color and ring. Younger birds have a
ring but adults should not

No other odd gulls were seen and most of the birds from previous trips were
elsewhere.
