Overcast conditions and a hint of drizzle, after last night's thunderstorms, coupled with a cool north wind, brought a good number of migrant species into the Skillern Tract at Anahuac. On the trail south to the East Unit overlook, and north up the grass trail along East Bay Bayou for a third of a mile, the following birds were the highlights. Warblers: 7+ Northern Parula, 8+ Hooded (only one was female), 2 Prothonotary, 1 Blue-winged, 5+ Black-and-white, 5+ Yellow-rumped, 4+ Orange-crowned (one actually displaying an orange crown), 1 Yellow-throated, 1 Worm-eating, and 1 Common Yellowthroat. Also noted amongst other species: 1 Orchard Oriole (male), 3 Yellow-throated Vireo, 6+ White-eyed Vireo, 1 Red-eyed Vireo,1 Ruby-throated Hummingbird, 1 Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, 1 Red-bellied Woodpecker, 5 Swamp Sparrow, 3+ Eastern Kingbird, a single Blue Jay, 1 Carolina Chickadee, 2 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher,1 House Wren, 4+ Ruby-crowned Kinglet, 20+ Little Blue Herons along the bayou, 1 Anhinga, 2 Bank Swallows and 2 Chimney Swifts. An excellent three hours birding (and six new to the year list).
