Overcast conditions and a hint of drizzle, after last night's thunderstorms,
coupled with a cool north wind, brought a good number of migrant species into
the Skillern Tract at Anahuac. On the trail south to the East Unit overlook,
and north up the grass trail along East Bay Bayou for a third of a mile, the
following birds were the highlights.
Warblers: 7+ Northern Parula, 8+ Hooded (only one was female), 2 Prothonotary,
1 Blue-winged, 5+ Black-and-white, 5+ Yellow-rumped, 4+ Orange-crowned (one
actually displaying an orange crown), 1 Yellow-throated, 1 Worm-eating, and 1
Common Yellowthroat.

Also noted amongst other species: 1 Orchard Oriole (male), 3 Yellow-throated
Vireo, 6+ White-eyed Vireo, 1 Red-eyed Vireo,1 Ruby-throated Hummingbird, 1
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, 1 Red-bellied Woodpecker, 5 Swamp Sparrow, 3+ Eastern
Kingbird, a single Blue Jay, 1 Carolina Chickadee, 2 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher,1
House Wren, 4+ Ruby-crowned Kinglet, 20+ Little Blue Herons along the bayou, 1
Anhinga, 2 Bank Swallows and 2 Chimney Swifts.

An excellent three hours birding (and six new to the year list).
