Yesterday on the way home from Houston to Corpus Christi I spotted a pair of
American Pipits bobbing their tails on the lawn at Buc-ees in Wharton, on US
Hwy. 59. Was angry at husband and did not ask him to stop so I could look.
Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face....

Subject: [texbirds] Lake Travis (Travis County) Black Scoter and other
waterfowl

> Veena Mohan and I birded Bob Wentz/Windy Point Park (NW Austin, Travis
> Co.) from 9-12 this morning (11/2/13). There was a lot of waterfowl
> activity on the lake early on, but many of the birds seemed to disperse as
> boat activity picked up with several rafts of birds sheltering in some of
> the shallow water bays/coves. There was also a lot of activity (ducks
> flying) over towards the dam, on the other side of the spit that juts out
> from Mansfield Dam Park. Below, is our list for the morning. The highlight
> was a female Black Scoter tucked in among the coots that were congregating
> around what is now once again with the recent rains a small island off to
> the south east of the "beach" or "sandbar" area (for those who chased the
> Nelson's Sparrow, just south of where it was last seen). Anyway, I saw the
> scoter around 0945, but it was at a poor angle (sun right in my eyes) and
> the raft it was in was moving out further into the lake. I snapped a few
> photos of the raft in hopes of getting lucky and capturing an image of the

> before I moved to get a better position to view the bird, but by the time
> I had a better position I could no longer locate the bird. We spent the
> rest of our time scanning the various rafts of coots and ducks trying to
> relocate the scoter with no luck. However, I suspect the bird is still
> around on the lake somewhere. While a lot of the ducks were flying around
> (flushed by boat traffic or whatnot), I did not see any really take off up
> and out of the lake area. So, maybe with a little patience, persistence,
> and luck, others will hopefully refind this bird.
