Greetings! It is time for "A SWIFT NIGHT OUT!" As summer draws to a close and the swifts have finished raising their young, these fascinating aerial acrobats begin to congregate in communal roosts prior to their migration in the fall. Some roosts may consist of an extended family group of a half a dozen birds or so, but the larger sites can host hundreds or even thousands of swifts! We encourage you to involve your local Audubon chapters, bird clubs, scout groups and neighbors in this exhilarating spectacle. On one night over the weekend of September 6th, 7th and 8th observe the roost starting about 30 minutes before sunset and estimate the number of swifts that enter. If you are unable to count on these three nights, we are still interested in your count from any other date. When you have your number, please fill out the online form at: http://www.chimneyswifts.org/page234.html If you prefer you can send us your results in a response to this email. Your report will go on the map but will not be part of the official data base. All reports will be posted at www.ChimneySwifts.org This is a continent-wide effort, so please pass this message along to any listserve or other groups that you think might be interested. We look forward to seeing your report!
