First, a question. Outside my house this morning, I saw two doves by a nest. One was perched a foot away, and the other was in the nest, head down, flicking the wing that was visible to me. What is this behavior? This morning was 40* and partly cloudy. It seemed eerily quiet at first, but a noisy American Robin ended that. Then I ran into Robin Doughty (yes, ha ha). In the reeds of the amphitheater, one Song Sparrow and one Swamp Sparrow came out from behind their green curtain. The male Bufflehead made an appearance with one Pied-billed Grebe, but otherwise empty in the laguna. By the peninsula, one Mute Swan and plenty of Red-winged Blackbirds were around, and the male Belted Kingfisher flew by calling shortly before a Barn Swallow. Cedar Waxwings everywhere. The lake had a Spotted Sandpiper on the far shore, and the Osprey flew by! One Red-shouldered Hawk was on its nest too. http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S13218221 Winter Highlights: Lifer Canvasback Whooping Cranes Eastern Screech-Owl in my backyard Seeing multiple species for the second time (with first in the RGV) Visiting Granger Lake, Camp Mabry, Mueller Development, and Lake Fail to bird for the first time. 80 species this month in my patch 106 for the year in Central Texas Hours of birding in my neighborhood, with hundreds of pictures taken 10,000+ Great-tailed Grackles, Rock Pigeons, and European Starlings recorded in eBird I can't wait for March!
