I checked out the ponds today north of Weslaco. As the summer progresses there
are fewer to check. Sugar House Pond on FM 1425 north of FM 107 was loaded with
shorebirds including 364 Black-necked Stilts, 26 American Avocets, 38
Killdeers, 500 Lesser Yellowlegs, 2 Greater Yellowlegs, 3 Willets, 100 Stilt
Sandpipers, 125 Least Sandpipers, 125 Western Sandpipers, 2 Pectoral
Sandpipers, 20 Semipalmated Sandpipers and 21 Wilson's Phalaropes. This spot
should be excellent till the water dries up in a few weeks.
The Hargill Playa had 10 Snowy Plovers, 3 Wilson's Plovers and an Osprey.
Delta Lake was too high for shorebirds. The ponds on Brushline are dry.
The pond on CR 20 north of 186 in Western Willacy County held an amzing 210
Gull-billed Terns, one Glossy Ibis, 70 White-faced Ibis, 450 Black-necked
Stilts, 100 american Avocets, 60 Lesser Yellowlegs, 3 Greater Yellowlegs, 56
Stilt Sandpipers, 250 Western Sandpipers, 25 Least Sandpipers, 25 Semipalmated
Sandpipers and 8 Wilson's Phalaropes.
