Hegar Farm on Kermier Rd August 24,
2016
I was at this site below FM2920 from 5:20-5:52 PM. Kassie saw this congregation
of birds yesterday afternoon. This morning when I drove by a little before 8 AM
I saw about 20 Wood Stork in the field. The field had been leveled and disc
earlier in the summer and is now bright green grass about 6-8 inches high. The
field is still rough from the disc and there are many rain pools some 20 yards
and more across. The field this afternoon was covered with several hundred
birds feeding in the muddy field. The only Item I saw them eat I could identify
was crawfish. This is likely the primary food but certainly earth worms and
other invertebrates are plentiful. I found the following:
Wood Stork 150 (155-165 plus later saw others roosting in trees on Hegar lake
west. Likely about 200 storks in the immediate area.
Great Blue Heron 4
Great Egret 10
Snowy Egret 20
Little Blue Heron 25
Cattle Egret 50
White Ibis 20
Plegadis Ibis 8
Roseate Spoonbill 6
Crested Caracara 15
Black-necked Stilt 2
Killdeer 50 (likely many more than this, most hidden and I did not try to count
them)
Semipalmated Plover 1
Long-billed Curlew 1 (The first of the season for me)
Least Sandpiper 2
Short-billed Dowitcher 1 (I consider this a very rare bird in west Harris
County, juvenile plumage, seen well at about 50 yards for several minutes. Not
particularly long-billed for a dowitcher. Straight smooth line to the back, not
hunch backed at all. Superciliary broad behind eye.)
Greater Yellowlegs 1
Likely saw a snipe as well but glimpsed as it landed and disappeared into the
grass that no doubt conceals many shorebirds.
