*Dear Claudio,*

Hope everyone had a great summer, now it's time to get back to work.
Election time! Everyone, please vote. Also, September is close and it is
John Dobson month with our first SUN-DAY on September 13th, and since
school is back in session - outreach!

Here in the LA area, we get many, many school, library and various club
requests for telescopes and outreach. Since most of them wait until a
couple of weeks before to contact us it's often hard to find enough
volunteers on short notice. We have started to contact all the events we
did last year and those we had to turn down and tell them we need to
schedule all fall/winter events during September. We've already scheduled
31 events. It also lets you set guidelines as to dates, rain dates, etc so
that they plan events better. Try it.

Clear Skies!

Remembering John

John Dobson would have been 100 this September so it seemed fitting to
write something in remembrance, but I thought instead to re-post an article
written years ago by John's friend David Levy. John had a lot of respect
and affection for David, so I think he'd like the choice. Also, hopefully
we have some younger members who might not have read the article.

WALDEN OF THE SKY
By David Levy Sky and Telescope, Sept 1995

On a warm, spring day in 1974 I planned a visit to the California Academy
of Sciences in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. But I never made it inside
because a collection of telescopes set up on its front portico caught my
attention. All had strange but simple altazimuth mountings, and all were
pointed at the Sun. In their midst stood a few amateur astronomers led by a
frail-looking man in his late 50s, who was explaining the miracle of
sunspots to a watching crowd. Then I realized that this shirtless man with
a ponytail was none other than the telescope-making wizard John Dobson.
Since there were more telescopes than people to run them, I offered to
help. The next two hours were a revelation, as I watched Dobson and his San
Francisco Sidewalk Astronomers in action. "Our only reason for being is to
show the sky to the people," Dobson told me. "Let other clubs do research
with fancy telescopes. We want to share the sky with everyone."
Dobson religiously believes in making telescopes with the simplest
materials and by the simplest procedures. He is like the 19th-century
American naturalist and author Henry David Thoreau, who opened his
masterpiece, Walden, by borrowing an axe so he could begin work on his
pondside home. But Dobson takes the Walden concept a step further, because
he uses his simple creation to show the universe to as many people as care
to look.
"I want a telescope in every driveway, on every sidewalk!" he trumpets.
"We don't make telescopes for us to use in our backyards and then go to
bed," he snaps. "We make simple scopes for the people to use."
And that is the heart of the Dobson Revolution.

Sidewalk Astronomer has a Dream
By Jo-Ann Jennings Staff Writer - Broken Arrow Ledger

Peggy Walker's biggest dream would be to have a science center in Broken
Arrow.
She has designed a portable, inflatable planetarium, which would seat 80,
to be accessible for not only the blind, but the disabled as well.
Walker added, "With an inflatable dome, we won't be hindered by weather."

Death Valley
So we made some reservations this morning for our yearly Death Valley
trip. We will arrive in Death Valley on Dec 26 and leave on Dec 29th. We're
right at full Moon, but the public love the Moon and we will also be doing
solar observing during the day.

We encourage everyone to join us. This is one of the busiest times for
Death Valley, so there are visitors from almost every country to meet and
chat with. Death Valley is a designated Dark Sky Park and even with a full
Moon, it's much, much more than most of us see from our bright cities.
There is cell service right near the Furnace Creek visitor center, but the
rest of the park is a dead zone so you get some freedom! Fresh air, dark
skies, no cell phones, interesting company, big open spaces, bare geology,
public astronomy - WHAT A GREAT WAY TO END THE YEAR!
There are several lodging/camping options, we have telescopes locally you
can borrow if you want to fly in.
Email us if you are interested in joining us or if you have more

WHAT'S
UP??

Send us your submissions for the newsletter. If you sent something and it
hasn't been printed, please be sure to resubmit it with "newsletter
submission" in the subject line and email it to us
<sidewalkastronomers@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> . Make sure to get the subject line
right, we get LOTS of emails.
I hope you enjoy reading the newsletter, please submit updates on your
local activities to be included in future editions. Send an email to
sidewalkastronomers@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with "newsletter submission" in the
subject line (this is important, we get massive amounts of email and
articles won't make it to the newsletter without that note). As you can
see, photos will be small so make sure that any you send represent well in
this size.

Please forward this email to other amateur astronomers that you feel would
enjoy reading it and becoming part of the Sidewalk Astronomers community!

Carpe Noctem... and share it!
