Jeff, suppose you haven't updated your Norton virus defs for one day. During that time you happen to get an email with a virus without knowing it. You remember to download the virus updates and then you send out an email which has been infected while in your comuter- Norton will then snag it on its way out. Might be a bit of an oddity for it to happen like that, but it could.
