As I know the story, the RCA system (which is still in use, for awhile anyway) and the CBS/Columbia system (synchronized color wheels) were both in contention for being the color TV system in the US. A tech I used to work with when I first started in this business, told me he had actually seen the color wheel system in operation, and said it looked quite good, or course, this was on a small crt. Can you imagine the size of the wheel required for a 36" set! -----Original Message----- From: techassist-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:techassist-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx]On Behalf Of J Silverman Sent: Friday, February 22, 2002 2:02 PM To: techassist@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [TechAssist] Re: technicial quary I think that was in the late 30s and the 40s. It was the same basic idea. Send the R, G, B picture fields sequentially to the crt, with the wheel synchronised to the video and let the brain integrate the colors. Had two problems. First it didnt work with people that had no brain. Second, each color filter had to be as big as the crt. Of course, in those days they werent very big, but the wheel thing over all was big, and you had that whoose whoose noise, like a Dutch windmill. With the DLP units, the wheel is just a little bitty thing inside the optical unit. Because it is small, the filters have been repeated around the wheel to reduce the required motor speed.
