Frank and All,

Thanks for the kind words.  The exciting part of this business is that we
DO learn every day.  I always though the 185 to be a horrible chassis. 
Then came the 203!!  Jerry sent a post regarding this EEPROM problem that
sheds some light.  I will copy that post below, in case you missed it. 
(Thanks, Jerry for sending this information.)

        RCA had a service bulletin about this problem:

        Symptom: The tuner cannot be aligned correctly using the XX15053-470
        microprocessor built in service mode.
        Cause: An error in the microprocessor code causes the incorrect value to
be
        stored in the EEPROM when the alignment is made using the built in
service
        mode.
        Cure: If the microprocessor is marked XX15053-470, use Chipper Check
        software to align the tuner. If the microprocessor is marked
XX15053-47A,
        the built in service mode should align correctly.
