The dics motor, "spindle motor" is bad not the pick-up. Very common. I have a 
few of these units, not the motors but the entire unit. I disconnect one wire 
to the motor put contact cleaner in the motor and then spin up the motor at 
15 volts or so. fixes them most of the time, but I always quote for a new 
motor anyway. Still a good way to find out if the motor is the problem.
