Most all sets now have their own test pattern internally for convergence.
You often need a source for the set to at least sync to. I found a unit
called Gandtec Hi-Wire at TigerDirect.com for $100 that converts VGA to
component and is selectable for 480p, 720p, and 1080i. You can create your
own test patterns on your computer and display them on any ED or HD set. It
has a VGA pass through so you can still connect your computer monitor.
Seems to work well enough for everything that I have tried it with.

Subject: [TechAssist] inexpensive HD pattern generator inquiry

I am assisting a small local TV shop (not unlike myself) in gearing up
for HD service. He's waiting for DSL to be installed, then I will direct
him to a forum.Aparently he doesn't have an HD generator, so if he needs
to go to 1080i pattern to do a convergence, he's sunk. On a tight
budget, can't afford thousands for a Sencore. I understand MCM has a
Tenma for about $650.00. There was a company CMM (computer monitor
maintanence) around that sold good priced sig gens.Need some suggestions
to pass along to him. Even if a lesser brand has fewer patterns, as long
as he can select a HD mode, isn't that the most important issue?
Thanks,
Phil Bader
