I agree 20% sounds fare. sounds too cheap on a 10 cent
resistor , but maybe too high on a 1100 buck light engine.
50% used to be the markup on tubes.
if i stock a part and take the chance of eating it, i feel i
deserve more for the gamble.
but to just order a part with a phone call, and then add big
bucks on for the bother, some customers dont appreciate.
We all have our approaches that seem to work for our areas.
I also do computer work, and often allow the customer to pick
up a hard drive where ever they like, and i will install it
for 65 bucks an hour. and they seem to be happier than if i
sell it to them, plus i dont have to guarantee it.
Most of the time my customers dont even ask what portion of
the bill is parts or labor, only how much is the total estimate.
Do you agree, the total is what counts??
so does it really matter if it is 20 bucks for parts and 130
labor = 150.
or 40 parts and 110 labor.
I often give small parts for free, it looks so funny to charge
50 cents for a resistor and 250 bucks to find and install it.
but if i spent 2 days hunting, it is fare.
I never attempted to model my business after a quick
convenience store. or radio shack.
in fact i wont even sell parts across the counter it takes
too much time spent ordering and hunting parts. and then the
liability question also.
I send them to wal-mart for remotes and radio shack for
resistors, etc.
I quit selling tvs several years ago, and think in was a good
choice. I have saved countless hours not educating people on
what to buy at wal-mart.
lol
I now use the theory that my time and knowledge are the
valuable item, and i cant waist time on the parts needs for a
do it your selfer, or programing a remote that they bring back
next week because it was the set.
I am here to repair tvs, if they need and can afford me.

Please dont think i am criticizing your system, i love to hear
others ideas, it makes me think and maybe improve my system.
