[TechAssist] Re: computer works on DSL internet but not Rogers cable internet [UPDATE]

Gary,

Now I've heard it all. Rogers uses the MAC address from the NIC (network
interface card) to confirm who is allowed to access their server. The
odds of both the built-in NIC and the Realtek MAC's being banned for
whatever reason from Rogers's server is not likely the problem but a
possibility. I've setup both Realtek and Dlink NICs on Rogers in Ottawa
with no problems before. A NIC is a NIC is a NIC, however you proved
that this is not the case, this is a very interesting and unusual
situation that's got me quite curious. If I find anything I'll be glad
to share. Good work Gary, I hope you charged the customer well.

Subject: [TechAssist] Re: computer works on DSL internet but not Rogers
cable internet [UPDATE]

Over the weekend I went to the customers home to work on this problem.
First I setup the cable modem to work on another computer to verify that
the modem was functioning ok, which it was. Then I removed the network
card (built-in SIS -900) from the Win XP device manager and rebooted.
That made no difference. I also checked all the network settings and
compared with how Rogers wanted it setup. Then I added a separate
network card in the system. This was a Realtek card. Internet was still
not accessible. Then finally I installed a D-Link network card and
instantly the internet was operating at full speed. Dos anyone know what
the differences are in these network (LAN) cards? Can they be setup to
work with cable internet? Not for this job because I'm leaving it as is
not for future reference.

Thanks to everyone who replied.

My last update:

Both the DSL and the cable modems are external to the computer, either
one connects to the computer via the network (LAN) interface on the
computer. The cable company is claiming that the network interface in
the computer is not functioning properly, even though it works perfectly
fine on DSL. I hope this clears up any confusion.
