Tom,
This data sheet info shows a base to emitter resistor in all 2SD1876 thru
2SD1881 devices as well as an internal damper diode:
http://www.tenfourltd.com/pdf/SY111A_e.pdf
but does not say what the resistance value is. If replacing a 2SD1881 with a
2SD1881 fixed the set for you then there is no doubt it was defective. The
common failure is the internal damper diode shorts or becomes leaky. My
reason for alerting you to a possible error was in case you had to order and
wait for a replacement only to find your wait was in vain.

Jim,
I used a 2sd1881 and measured it before I installed it and it did not
show any resistance from base to emitter. It was my last one and the TV is
gone now, should a 2sd1881 have resistance from base to emitter? I know what
you are referring to as I also have seen many HOT that have about 50 ohms
from base to emitter. And at first I thought the original was ok , until I
checked it against my 2sd1881 which did not show any resistance.
