Hello all, Have set in shop, yes it's an oldie, one of the original digital
sets from Zenith. Main board is a 9- 5xx, predates the 9-700 series of
digital boards. Originally set came in for intermittent tuner, soldered the
living snott out of the 2 boards, the main board and the IF and audio board.
Everything seemed to be fine. Couple of weeks later, intermittent tuner
again. Went over everything again, let play for about a week in shop,
tapping, rapping and otherwise trying to embarrass set into acting up.
everything fine, deliver again, worked about 3 weeks this time and , hold
on, intermittent tuner. Back to the old shop, checking 9-387 board, seemed
to be int at processor IC, which was socketed. making an assumption similar
to what we experienced a long time ago with Tosh and socketed IC's (int
sound, pix etc.), removed IC socket. Couldn't insert IC into holes because
of a cap that was installed into a slot in the board under the socket. This
cap C1207 a 1500 pf cap looked like a piece of board with some print on it,
cracked and fell apart when we tried to remove it. We replaced it with a
disc cap of the correct value, soldered to the underside of the board. From
that time on we have had a "Tuner Muted" situation, ie no signal, just snow.
Is the physical position of this cap important (against base of IC), is it
type specific or has anyone run into a Tuner Muted symptom with a 387 board
before. Open to suggestions, prefer not to require use of firearms or large
blunt instruments. Set was actually an extremely good set in its day and
still gave a very good picture when it was working. Thanks to all Peter
