I have plenty of 8 ohm speakers above 2W but the holes are 2-1/2 X 3-1'2. I have used resistors to make a speaker match, without any problems. Also in radios for prisoners, I have put a resistor in place of the speaker so it won't be just open if they unplug the headphone. An 8 ohm speaker is 8 ohms impedance not DC resistance, but I don't see how the output circuit can tell the difference, since an 8 ohm resistor isn't a coil, it should look like 8 ohms. Now if you used a wire wound resistor, that might have impedance to it that would not look like 8 ohms.
