Three common problems on that mechanism:
1. Front loading gears get out of alignment. There is a kit of improved
parts.;
2. Molded pin breaks off of plastic main slide and jams mechanism.;
3. Dirty mode switch causes all sorts of problems.
You might try running the loading motor from external power to check out the
mechanism.
