THe www.linux.org is a good starting "jumpsite". select the "distributions"
tab and look for the ones that have "GPL" or general public license. Those
are the free ones.

Red hat and Fedora are the most mainstream distributions as well as GNU.
I think mandrake has gone commercial.

The distributions come with all the basics, including mozilla. So far I have
three computers running it.

Presently, I'm studying "My sql" and PHP to use as the database/web
function.
