The cause of the noisy door closing was a broken flex cable on the
takeup reel side of the tape compartment assembly. The flex cable was
being dragged and squeezed back and forth as the door opened and closed.
This flex cable looks like it feeds the right side sensor. I will phone
Sony on Monday and see if the cable is available separately.

C31:23

Error code is for supply reel malfunction. Most likely there is a break
in
the LS flex circuit board traces or the supply reel sensor is defective
or
maybe the magnet disc on the reel hub is loose.
